There are other major concerns when visiting New Orleans, namely: what festivals are happening, and how many formal opportunities will exist for overindulgence? Spoiler alert: something will be happening, and yes, you can always have too much of a good thing. Meanwhile, "not-summer" (October to April) can include a surprisingly chilly winter, bracketed by a roughly two-month long, gorgeous spring on the one end, and an autumn that lasts maybe three days on the other (we’re exaggerating, but only just).īut "best time to visit" is not just a question of climate. Keep in mind that most of summer also overlaps with hurricane season, which has its own climatic footnotes. Summer lasts from May until October but can rear its muggy head at any time of the year: 80☏ (26☌) days in the middle of a 50☏ (10☌) week in winter are definitely a thing. Voodoo Music + Arts Experience: This event has been canceled for 2020.This Halloween edition, which rolls through the French Quarter, isn’t so different from what you might see at Mardi Gras, but it’s a fair bit spookier, featuring monsters, ghosts, goblins, and the like. The Dukes were the regular-season champions of the slightly weak and wide-open Colonial Athletic Association last season after finishing last the year before. James Madison and Southern Miss are both top 200 teams in the KenPom and reside somewhere in the middle of the current Sun Belt standings. The duo provides a needed boost to the Sun Belt’s basketball reputation – a boost that could make the Sun Belt a two-bid conference down the road. Old Dominion has had four 25-win seasons in the last decade and made a brief appearance in the AP Top 25 in 2014. The Thundering Herd have three 20-win seasons in the last five seasons and upset fourth-seeded Wichita State in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Marshall is fresh off a C-USA regular-season championship but got unlucky in the first round of the conference tournament. Good news for the Sun Belt, not great news for the Panthers.Īccording to Ken Pomeroy’s preseason ratings, Marshall and Old Dominion would be near the top of the Sun Belt’s east division in men’s basketball, right behind Georgia State. The east division has become one of the toughest – if not the toughest – division in the Group of Five. The Sun Belt added two schools that can immediately compete for the football title, two more that can contend in a few seasons and four programs with dedicated fanbases that travel well. Other pros include their 36,000-seat facility and their proximity to four Sun Belt schools. The Golden Eagles are bottoming out right now (last in the nation in points per game, 128 th in SRS) but could have a fun team by the time they join the conference in 2023. While the other three schools expand the Sun Belt’s geography northward, Southern Miss fits right into the conference’s current footprint. Bonus: Marshall adds a beautiful green to the Sun Belt’s color palette. From the tragedy of the 1970 airplane crash and We Are Marshall to the Herd’s undefeated 1999 season and spectacular 13-1 campaign in 2014, college football fans know Marshall.Īccording to SP+, Marshall would battle Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State this season for the east division title. Marshall has a storied history and a lot of brand recognition. ODU football may not immediately compete for titles but can fill out the middle of the conference for the time being. The Monarchs have a considerable athletics budget, bring in over 18,000 people a game, and are in the major metro area of Norfolk, VA. Old Dominion only restarted their football program in 2014 but have experienced the near-full spectrum of success since ten wins and a bowl victory in 2016, then just one win and a bottom-five Simple Rating System (SRS) ranking in 2019. Still, they could immediately contend for the Sun Belt east division title come 2023. They’ve averaged over 22,500 people per game so far in 2021 in beautiful Bridgeforth Stadium.Īccording to Bill Connelly’s SP+ ratings at, the Dukes would expect to place around Troy and Georgia State in the Sun Belt standings this season. James Madison is similar to Coastal, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern, with 12 FCS playoff appearances in the last 20 years and three FCS championships. Let’s look at how the additions of James Madison, Old Dominion, Marshall and Southern Mississippi changed the landscape of the Sun Belt’s major sports. Now the Sun Belt has placed itself in a position to solidify its standing as a top Group of Five conferences in football, rejuvenate the top of the conference in basketball, add national contenders in baseball and even bring back men’s soccer! In 2013, the conference’s front office focused on adding FCS powerhouses with strong fanbases, including Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina and even Georgia Southern – to complement their traditional and developing programs. Like any good plan, those who made it needed time to see the full results, and we have reached that point. Georgia State and South Alabama had football programs still in their infancy. Conference USA ripped five schools from the Sun Belt, temporarily relegating the conference to a fragile conglomerate of schools stretching from south Georgia to Idaho – the logistical nightmare of 10 to 12 athletic directors across the nation. The great conference realignment of the early 2010s had a massive effect on the Sun Belt. ![]() ![]() As it moves across land, it will weaken.Īrea of Downeast Maine jut out more into the Atlantic, which makes those locations more susceptible to the impact of a hurricane or its remnants. When the subway was built, the primary concern for its engineers was not flooding, but ventilation. But that misses the more nuanced reality about the infrastructure we've built in a previous age and its compatibility with the uncharted territory we find ourselves in, as well as an abject failure of political leadership to take responsibility rather than spout vague platitudes and buzzwords while treating the climate emergency like any other political issue that can be exploited for votes with little intention of action. And maybe filming it.It is tempting to blame the MTA, as New Yorkers are wont to do, for hitting the snooze alarm on this wake up call. (“We all have a role to play,” the administration informs us.) When it comes to getting around, that role also now includes wading through hip-deep water on your way to work. The administration’s approach to climate disaster is two-pronged: There’s what the city is willing to do, and then there’s what it’s saying you should do for yourself. The novelty is fading for commuters, who have to plan their travel accordingly.Įarlier this month, Eric Adams introduced a flood plan that includes handing out inflatable dams for people to set up around their houses. Witnessing the flooded transit system last year, even before Ida hit, felt like an out-of-body experience videos went viral of people hopping through stations in garbage bags used like potato sacks. Meanwhile, deluged subways are beginning to feel more like the norm. Many more drainage systems need to be upgraded the same goes for the ventilation. A Regional Plan Association analysis from last July found that 20 percent of subway-station entrances could be swamped during extreme rains. “Climate change is accelerating, not slowing down, but our ability to retrofit a city that’s built out like New York takes a long time,” Timon McPhearson, director of the Urban Systems Lab at the New School, told PopSci last fall. The Adams administration just announced the completion of a sewage project begun by the de Blasio administration to alleviate flooding in Queens. The city spent $5 billion on Sandy-related recovery and resilience projects. As Gizmodo noted, in the years since Sandy, the MTA has installed flex gates and drainage systems. The changes we’ve seen have been more modest. One told Gizmodo that fixing subway flooding would require addressing built infrastructure as a whole, and that solutions would amount to a systemic transformation of the landscape: “reducing paved surfaces, planting trees, daylighting underground streams, creating more parks and green roofs.” It’s the kind of thing that requires cooperation from federal, state, and city governments and a staggering amount of funding. These were different “weather events” - Sandy caused a huge coastal surge, whereas Ida brought torrential flash floods - but they both overwhelmed the city and especially its transit system.Įxperts warned that we would only continue to see storms with more extreme rainfall absent radical intervention, the drama of a city transformed by water would dull into something more routine. Those speeches and recommendations sounded a lot like what happened after Superstorm Sandy, which shut down the trains for several days in 2012. “Mother Nature is not going to wait for us to build out a 20-year plan,” Eric Adams, then–Democrat mayoral nominee, said at the time. Officials at the time made somber speeches about urgency and a need to make the city more climate-resilient. Last summer’s Hurricane Ida killed 11 people in basement apartments and shut down every subway line, requiring rider evacuations. 6BALEZJY5n- Moshe Schwartz July 18, 2022 WATERFALL: Heavy rain flooding the NYC subway system.
